Bindy Ward’s Sunrise Beach house is a labour of love. Working with Owen Architecture and Dan Young Landscape she stripped back her late 1960s beach bungalow back to its foundations to deliver a thoughtful renovation that preserves the home’s best features while improving its comfort and flow and maximising the incredible sea views.

Inspired by a remodeled Joseph Eichler home in California with its vast gable windows and connection to the surrounding gardens, this renovation allowed Bindy an opportunity to re-decorate her home and the ability to present her design aesthetic and passion for landscape design. The home is a canvas for Bindy’s collection of furniture, objects, and art as well as a showcase for her treasured collection of handmade and antique pots and plants. It is a space where she effortlessly combines vintage objects, tribal chic and flea market finds.

Almost every room in the house opens out to the lush landscapes, with ocean views and the greenery of the gardens balancing out the pared-back material palette of the home. Brimming with warmth and light, the main living space is defined by an iconic Arflex Strips sofa in mushroom tones which subtly picks up on the INAX Japanese ceramic tiles and stone details which reoccur throughout the home. The intersection of vintage pieces collected on her travels such as the Taraxacum pendant by Achille and Pier Giacomo Castiglioni for Flos, along with the insertion of custom joinery and collected artworks including a hero painting by Martine Emdur adds a touch of design history all whilst maintaining the original feeling of the relaxed family beachside bungalow.
